An avant-garde film by Man Ray called Emak Bakia (“Leave me alone” in Basque) inspires this story of a quest. The house near Biarritz where Man Ray’s film was shot in 1926 bore that peculiar name and the creator of this new film decided to undertake a search on foot to find it. Only three views of that mansion exist: the image of its front door, two columns of a window, and a section of nearby coast. A search based on these old images would not be easy. There was nothing listed in the archives and no one today remembers the house. Therefore, he would ask for help and assistance from other informers, such as chance and the wind.

Biografia regista

Cineasta e direttore artistico del Festival Internazionale di Cinema Punto de Vista dal 2013 al 2016 a Pamplona, Spagna. Il suo primo lungometraggio La casa Emak Bakia (2012) racconta la storia della ricerca della casa sulla costa basca dove Man Ray ha girato il suo film Emak Bakia, edificio che si credeva scomparso e il cui nome, che in basco significa “lasciami in pace”, è stato il motto della carriera artistica dell’artista americano. Il suo secondo lungometraggio Zumiriki (2019) racconta l’esperienza del regista stesso, isolato nella foresta della sua infanzia per quattro mesi, in una capanna di legno di fronte a un’isola affondata dalla costruzione di una diga. Zumiriki è stato presentato in anteprima internazionale nella sezione Orizzonti della 76ª Mostra del Cinema di Venezia, è stato tradotto in 15 lingue, premiato come miglior opera documentaria nella sezione Nuevas Olas al Festival del Cinema Europeo di Siviglia e come miglior film al PerSo – Perugia Social Film Festival 2019. Autore del progetto fotografico Las Ciudades Visibles, del saggio Oteiza, notas al margen, sull’opera di Jorge Oteiza, e curatore del volume Time (con testi di John Berger, Víctor Erice, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Georges Didi-Huberman e Nicole Brenez), sta attualmente preparando un progetto di entomologia e filologia sui 127 diversi nomi di farfalle in lingua basca.
